Originally built in 1890 by Mahoney Brothers, number 25 (originally 525) served the Ferries & Cliff House Railway's Sacramento and Clay
Sts. cable car line. It was transferred to the Powell-Mason and Washington-Jackson lines following the 1906 earthquake
and fire. The paint scheme of red and cream, applied to the car in its 2006-08 rebuild,
represents the United Railroads livery at the time of the fire. Information from Market Street Railway

PHOTOS TAKEN IN THE 1950s:
Powell cable car 525 signed for Washington-Jackson on the turntable at Powell and Eddy Sts. in a great quality slide from the early 1950s.
Washington-Jackson's inner end would be combined with the outer end of O'Farrell-Jones-Hyde to become today's Powell-Hyde line.
Cable cars used to unload and load less formally than current procedures. The crew is rotating the car on the turntable with a load
of passengers already on board and more apparently coming.
Scan of a slide in my collection added 03/14/13.
