Cable car 42 was built by W.L. Holman Co. in 1906 for the California Street Cable Railroad Co. Muni withdrew it from service in 1954, the car was
privately preserved, and Market Street Railway brought it back to San Francisco for restoration in its O'Farrell Jones & Hyde Sts. livery.
It's used as a ceremonial car for the mayor, but more frequently it has been appearing in revenue service at Heritage Weekend, starting with
the Muni centennial celebration (which became the annual Heritage Weekend) on November 4, 2012.
On September 8, 2018 car 42 was run on a special trip out to Aquatic Park and then in to regular service
on California Street. This was the first time in over 60 years that the car ran on its native Hyde Street with passengers.
