The Regional Transit Authority became the operator of public transit in New Orleans on July 1, 1983. Kenner joined RTA in 1985. All New Look
buses inherited from NOPSI were replaced by 1986 and advanced design buses replaced by 1998. Under its leadership, the
streetcar system expanded with new lines on the Riverfront (1988), Canal Street (2004), Loyola Avenue (2013), and
North Rampart/St. Claude (2016). Transdev (formerly Veolia) was contracted
to operate the system since 2008. A new fleet of biodiesel buses replaced those destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The first hybrid articulated
buses were received to help on overcrowded lines. RTA also maintains The Lift paratransit service.
